Logo Designs

Within Māori culture is a wealth of history, tradition and symbolic meaning, When these forms are carried into corporate identity, branding and logo design properly, they become more than visual identity alone. More than something sitting on the surface of a business card or website. They carry feeling. Memory. Connection. A reflection of the spirit behind the Tohu, logo.

If you observe traditional Māori forms such as the koru, tiki, hei mātau. Like the manaia, all carry their own whakapapa and deeper layers of meaning. Many people today recognise the koru as speaking of unfolding life, movement and growth, or a new beginning.

Other forms mean protection, navigation, balance, ancestry, and the relationship between the physical and spiritual worlds. Not random patterns. Not decoration alone. But forms carrying memory, relationship, and long human observation passed from one generation to the next.

But these patterns did not begin with us. They were already here long before human footsteps touched the earth. Seen within the unfurling fern, the spiral of galaxies, ocean currents, rivers, wings, bone, storms, stars, and the movement of life itself.

Māori design did not invent these forms. It observed them through wānanga. Through relationship. Through long memory. Nature was already speaking. Our ancestors simply learnt how to listen. But these forms should never be treated as empty decoration or passing trends. They carry cultural weight. Wairua. Memory. Respect matters. Understanding matters. Kōrero matters.

The use of Māori design should come through genuine connection and understanding, not simply because the patterns look appealing inside marketing or branding. The deeper meaning behind the symbols should always be acknowledged and respected. Since entering the creative world during the 1980s, I have witnessed a major shift in how Māori identity and visual language has moved from the outer edges toward the centre of Aotearoa’s wider cultural identity.
