Obtaining a design

There are hundreds of Māori designs being created every day. So how does one go about getting a Māori design created? And what is the correct procedure?

Fortunately New Zealand is not short of willing artists and designers ready to jump at the opportunity to express their creativity. But not all are created equal. Skills vary between individuals. A method for qualifying a good designer is their reputation, service and knowledge of their product. How credible are they in the community? An artist or designer who is well respected will advise and consult you on the appropriateness of your product and if it meets certain cultural standards. Be prepared to pay the highest price for an expert.

Remember you are paying for the Artist reputation plus their knowledge in their field of expertise. Ensure you are clear about what you want. Nothing is more frustrating for a designer than having information not previously discussed added afterwards. This could mean going back to the drawing board or revising the original concept continuously. This could prove to be an expensive exercise.

Do your homework and make sure you have all the information available to discuss your design needs. All designers have a certain unique design style. Look at their portfolio of recent works to get a feel of their design style. Not all designs are charged the same way. A good design will cost anything from $250 to $2500.00 and will depend on your budget.

If you are a new customer be prepared to pay up to 40% of the agreed price before the beginning of a project which is non refundable. You are paying for the time it takes for the designer to develop the concept. This also commits you to working with the designer.

Do not be afraid to discuss the budget from day one. The amount you intend paying will dictate the quality and speed of your design. Do not pay for a Mini coup and expect a Rolls Royce. The amount you pay is in direct proportion to the value you place on your design
