The Digital Moko

Tā Moko or better known to most as traditional Māori tattoo is currently one of the most internationally well known of Māori arts. The Moko had a personal and spiritual meaning. It was reserved for people of high rank such as chiefs, warriors and those of high ranking status. As kowhaiwhai designs they were originally chiselled into the skin and left the impression of grooves. It was extremely painful for the wearer and there were a number of protocols and rituals that took place while this was being performed.

This practice died out in the latter half of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Today most people choose the surface tattoo instead of the chiselled method, nevertheless the tradition is still practiced with all the energy and intensity of days gone with recognised masters in this field.
